Fix It or Sell It?
When the car that gets you to work every day needs a major repair, it’s worth pausing before you approve the bill. Three numbers help: the repair quote, what the car would realistically sell for once it’s fixed, and what it’s worth today as it is. If the repair costs about as much as the difference between the last two, or more, selling it as it is usually leaves you better off, especially if other work is coming up soon.
Repairing is often the better choice when the car has otherwise been reliable, the problem is a single known fault with a clear written quote, and the car will be worth noticeably more once it’s fixed. If you need a car either way, compare the repair bill with what a similar replacement would cost you too; a sound older car you already own can be cheaper to keep running than to replace.
Used-car values have been easing. Canadian Black Book’s used-vehicle retention index for August 2026 was 7.6% lower than a year earlier, so a repair that made sense when the car was worth more may not make sense now. Get a written quote before you decide.
| Option | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Repair and keep | The repair costs well below what the car will be worth afterwards, and nothing else major is due | A written repair quote and any other known problems |
| Sell privately | The car runs and you have time to show it to buyers | ICBC's transfer steps; accept only cash or a verified bank draft |
| Sell it as it is | It doesn't run, has major damage, or you don't want the time and risk of a private sale | An accurate description so your quote matches the car |
If the car can’t be driven, waiting has its own costs. Storage-only insurance keeps a parked car covered but doesn’t let you drive it. In Surrey, a vehicle that can’t run under its own power, or one that looks wrecked and doesn’t display a current licence, can be treated as a wrecked vehicle on residential property after a complaint, with a deadline to remove or store it.
Junk and Scrap Car Removal in Fleetwood
Many of the cars we collect in Fleetwood have been parked for months, failed an inspection or need repairs that cost more than they’re worth. We buy them as they are, including cars with missing parts, cars that won’t start and vehicles written off after a collision. A scrap car is valued mostly on its weight, its catalytic converter and any reusable parts, and metal prices move over time, so mention any damage or missing parts when you ask for a quote.
We also buy larger vehicles, including work vans, older pickups and SUVs with engine or transmission problems, and running used cars you’d rather not sell privately.
Where We Pick Up in Fleetwood
We collect vehicles across Fleetwood, from the streets around 84 Avenue and Fraser Highway to 160 Street, Fleetwood Park, Tynehead Park and Fleetwood Village. Most pickups here are from driveways and townhouse complexes; if the car is in an underground parkade, tell us the height clearance and access details so we can confirm what’s possible. Neighbouring Newton and Cloverdale have their own pages, and you can read more about selling your car anywhere in Surrey.
Questions Fleetwood Sellers Ask
How much will I get for my car?
It depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, condition and weight, and on current scrap metal prices. Offers go up to $50,000 for qualifying vehicles. Tell us about the car for an accurate quote.
Is towing free?
Yes. Free towing is included for vehicles we purchase within our service area.
How do you pay?
We pay in cash at collection, once the sale is agreed and the paperwork is complete.
What do I need to have ready?
Have your vehicle registration and photo ID ready, plus the keys if you have them. In B.C., you and the buyer complete ICBC’s Transfer/Tax form (APV9T); you sign it once you’ve been paid, keep your licence plates and the seller’s copy of the form, and then cancel your insurance or move it to another vehicle. ICBC explains every step in its guide to selling a used vehicle. If a document is missing, contact us and we’ll tell you what’s needed.
Can the offer change when you arrive?
If you’ve described the car accurately, we generally honour the offer we gave you. If the vehicle turns out to be significantly different from what was described, we’ll usually decline the purchase rather than renegotiate on the spot, so tell us about any damage, missing parts or mechanical problems when you ask for your quote.
